Arco di San Damiano

During my early hunt for roman Roads via the internet, I consistently came across photographs of the Arch of San Damiano, also referred to as the Arco di Traiano,  at the Carsulae excavation.  As with several other locations, I felt a strong urge to see the arch in person.  Details on the via Flaminia at Carsulae can be found on page 3 of this blog.   This former gate to the city was so impressive that I felt obligated to share my photographs.

The gate was built during the time of Augustus, 27 BC.  It consisted of three arches and was covered with marble. What remains is a massive, towering structure that sits in a predominantly rural setting.
